Starmer, Rutte Confer on Strengthening Arctic Cooperation

(MENAFN) British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte held talks on Thursday focusing on advances achieved by allied countries in safeguarding the Arctic and concurred on the importance of deepening collaborative security efforts.

During a telephone conversation, Starmer and Rutte reviewed the NATO leader’s discussions at Davos and evaluated the headway made by partner nations in recent days regarding Arctic security, as stated by the UK prime minister’s office.

Both leaders concluded that it was essential for NATO member states to continue acting jointly to intensify security coordination across the region.

"The UK stood ready to play its full part," Starmer reiterated.

US President Donald Trump has pushed for control over resource-rich Greenland, pointing to national security concerns and the expanding influence of Russia and China. This initiative, however, faced resistance from European nations, which Trump had previously warned could be subject to tariffs.

Following a meeting with Rutte on the margins of the World Economic Forum in Davos on Wednesday, Trump declared that a framework for a prospective agreement concerning Greenland and the wider Arctic area had been put in place, while also retreating from the earlier tariff threat.
