Trump drops threat to impose new tariffs on European countries
The reversal came after Trump held discussions with the NATO secretary-general during the World Economic Forum in Davos. Following the meeting, Trump announced that progress had been made toward an understanding on Greenland and broader Arctic cooperation.
“Based upon a very productive meeting that I have had with the Secretary General of NATO, Mark Rutte, we have formed the framework of a future deal with respect to Greenland and, in fact, the entire Arctic Region,” Trump wrote on social media. He said the emerging arrangement would serve the interests of both the United States and its NATO partners.
Referring to the previously announced trade measures, Trump added: “Based upon this understanding, I will not be imposing the Tariffs that were scheduled to go into effect on February 1st.” He also noted that discussions included Greenland’s strategic importance within the US Golden Dome missile defense initiative.
According to reports, the NATO secretary-general later said that both sides shared the view that “collectively we have to protect the Arctic region.” He further indicated that Washington would continue consultations with Denmark and Greenland to prevent Russia and China from expanding their influence on the island.
Trump has repeatedly argued that Greenland’s strategic location makes it vital for US security interests and for countering Moscow and Beijing. He had previously warned that European countries, including Denmark, would face a 10% tariff beginning in February, with the rate set to rise to 25% by June if no agreement was reached. Several NATO members publicly criticized the threat.
While speaking again in Davos, Trump reaffirmed his position on the importance of Greenland but stated that military force would not be used.
Earlier the same day, European lawmakers halted progress on approving a trade agreement between the EU and the US, according to reports, citing objections to Trump’s tariff warnings.
