Rutte Urges NATO to Keep Ukraine as Top Priority

(MENAFN) NATO’s Secretary General, Mark Rutte, stated on Wednesday that although territorial disagreements such as Greenland must be resolved "in an amicable way," the foremost concern for the alliance continues to be Ukraine.

During a panel discussion at the annual World Economic Forum in Davos, Rutte underlined that the safety of both Europe and the United States depends on sustained backing for Kyiv in the face of persistent Russian assaults.

He reiterated, "On Greenland, because we have to make sure that that issue gets solved in an amicable way. But the main issue is not Greenland. Now, the main issue is Ukraine," making clear that Ukraine remains the central matter.

Addressing recent strains between Europe and Washington, Rutte explained that he is working "behind the scenes" to ease disputes, cautioning that public remarks could obstruct delicate diplomatic negotiations.

He added, "I'm also a little bit worried that he might drop the ball focusing so much on these other issues. And as we speak, Russian missiles and Russian drones are attacking the energy infrastructure in Ukraine," stressing the urgency of the situation.

Rutte cautioned that while diplomatic initiatives and financial assistance—such as the EU’s €90 billion ($105 billion) package—are significant, the immediate priority must be ensuring Ukraine has sufficient means to defend itself.

He emphasized, "Focus in Ukraine should be our number one priority, and then we can discuss on all the issues, including Greenland. But it should be Ukraine first, because it is crucial for our European and US security."

Finally, Rutte highlighted NATO’s unified defense framework, insisting that Europe must keep enhancing its military strength in cooperation with the US, pointing out that American forces remain deeply committed to safeguarding Europe.
